Specific Scheduling Information per Grade

In 6th grade every student at BMS takes the four required core content classes: Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Math, and Science. Students also take a quarter of: STEM, PE/Health, Spanish Exploratory, and French Exploratory. Additionally, all students at Bearden, including 6th graders, take a yearlong introductory level fine art or performing art (Art, Band, Orchestra, or Chorus).

In 7th grade every student at BMS takes the four required core content classes: Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Math, and Science. Students also take a quarter of: STEM, PE/Health, and either a semester of Spanish or French. Like in 6th grade, all BMS students take a yearlong fine art or performing art. This course is the intermediate level of either Art, Band, Orchestra, or Chorus.

In 8th grade every student at BMS takes the four required core content classes: Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Math, and Science. As 8th graders, students have more choices for exploration in Related Arts. They also have an extra period of Related Arts that 6th and 7th graders do not have. All 8th graders are required to take Health and PE, STEM, and a foreign language. Like in 6th grade and 7th grade, all BMS students take a yearlong fine art or performing art. This course is the advanced level of either Art, Band, Orchestra, or Chorus. Additionally 8th graders have more RA course options like; YA Literature Novel Study, Improvisation, Graphic Design, etc.

Courses Requiring Application

The courses requiring students to apply for registration are listed below with links to their specific applications.

Digital Design (Yearbook) - fulfills a student's Yearlong Fine Arts requirement.
Visual Art I - this is a high school credit course so the grade a student receives will be reflected on the high school transcript. Additional information from Mr. Weininger and Mr. Crabtree can be found here.
Advanced STEM 8 - this course moves at a faster pace than semester-long STEM 8 and because it is yearlong, it covers quite a bit more advanced STEM units.

Academic Release and Permission Slip

Academic data and performance records are used for placing students in the appropriate level of courses. Because these placements are believed to be the ones that will provide students with the greatest opportunity for academic success, requests for changes should seriously be weighed by the parent/guardian.

However, if a parent/guardian feels that such a change needs to be considered, an academic override request must be completed.

For rising 8th grade parents/guardians, recommendations for high school credit classes cannot be changed even with an academic release. The reason is that these are classes for which the high school is giving the credit, not the middle school. Enrollment in honors-level classes in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will not be changed after the first week of school.

Submission of this form does not guarantee a change in course placement. Requests will be reviewed by the grade-level counselor and the grade-level administrator. The administrator will either approve the change or request a parent meeting to gather information and/or address concerns.

In addition to the academic override request, parents/guardians must come to the school to get a grade-level counselor and an administrator to sign the Honors + High School Credit Course Permission Slip.
